Birdville Hawks Men’s Basketball with a lot at stake on Friday night

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS:    The Birdville Hawks (15-15) will face district rival Saginaw (18-15)  in a do or die game.     – – –  The game is on Friday night, tip-off at 7:30, and it’s a neutral-site,  as it will be held at Richland High School.    In case you are wondering as you read this, tickets are: 5$ for adults, and 3$ for students.     – – –    The Hawks have  wanted to play big games, and they have, the Hawks have come up big recently, but  they need to continue that on Friday night.    Birdville needs one more push before they will make a hopeful appearance to the post-season.          I felt it should be noted that a similar, yet different scenario occurred for the Football teams at both Birdville and Saginaw during football season.
Both team’s entered the game undefeated at 7-0, and if  Saginaw had won, the Hawks would have had to face Denton Guyer in the first round of the playoffs, but it was different in the fact that both team’s were already guaranteed a spot in the playoffs, and that wasn’t going to change no matter the outcome of that game.         So to clarify, there is more at stake here for the Basketball team.

Birdville Men’s Basketball team not able to excecute in stretch *COLUMN*

FORT-WORTH:   – – –  You can’t just rely on small moments of greatness,  it’s the truth.    It’s how games are won.

The Hawks like they have so many-time’s before in the season, played some good defense through-out Saturday afternoon’s loss to Polytech at Alan Billingsley Field-House , but ultimately they  couldn’t find the answers offensively;  that is despite some late second half mini-runs.   Polytech, though the victors in what was a hard-fought game, on both -sides of  the floor did have some trouble closing this one out on the Hawks;  this is what helped the Hawks during these small moments of  greatness.

Basketball is a fragile sport, meaning that something as simple as one given up second-chance point could come to haunt your team later on in the game.

– – – The offense, though probably when it comes down to it in this game for Birdville is one of the key reasons why they lost this game, isn’t the only one.

– – –  The Hawks gave up too many second-chance’s, though luckily, not all of them were converted successfully for Poly, but you don’t  win  basketball games on luck.

– – – Rely on nothing, and play smart basketball those are the recipes for success in basketball.      Though, I do feel it should be reminded, this team is younger, and based on what I’ve seen in covering  them this season, they’ll be okay, they’ll learn.

Birdville’s Deep Playoff run in part to playoffs hero, Xavier Turner

No One has been able to stop the Birdville Hawk’s red-hot offense at all this season.   13 Games in, and  Birdville has made it their furthest trip ever to the playoffs,  thanks in large part to an explosive offense, the Hawks are still undefeated, and have made it this far.   — As for their playoffs run, it all starts at  running-back Xavier Turner.   Turner, who alongside quarterback Justin Martin, helped shred defenses all season long in the regular season, and the dominance still continues, from the junior running-back.
— It’s just that the Hawks aren’t blowing team’s out now.   But this is the playoffs, there aren’t any bad team’s in the playoffs, as one team will be declared the winner, and the other team will go home.     Turner has tried everything in his power to make sure that doesn’t happen to his team, as he  has had two four rushing touchdown playoff games, in what has been a lengthy playoffs for the undefeated Hawks.
X.Turner Bhs Hawks RB
— If  Turner wants his team’s chances to remain solid, which he probably does, he’ll have to find it in him to break a few more games like that, along with what has been a very solid passing game all season long for Birdville, led by Justin Martin, but one of the big reasons the Hawks are still in the playoffs is due to the hot  running-game.      — And it all starts with Junior running-back, Xavier Turner.

Birdville In-Depth Playoffs Preview

The Birdville Hawks started their playoff run against the Azle Hornets.    The  Hornets came into the game with a 6-4 record, and were rightfully so considered the under-dogs, as the Hawks were the undefeated team, at 10-0.

— Though the under-dog,  make no mistake about it, Azle gave Birdville all they could handle in the bye-round playoff game.    Trading scores back and forth, as both teams as neither team seemed to have been able to pull away.

Azle starting quarterback, Senior Corbyn Koiner was a threat against the Birdville defense, as he gave the Hawks defense all they could handle.    Koiner   —Running-back, Hunter McDonald has carried the main load for the Hornets,    who had 5 100 yard rushing games during the season.

The Hornets, despite having over 400 yards of offense, and 45 points against the Hawks, weren’t able to defeat Birdville.  Overall,   the two totaled for nearly 900 yards of offense.      Azle showed they score in the regular season, as they where 3-0 when they scored 31 points.     —  The Hawks, being the favored team were finally able to put the game away, on a big Xavier Turner rushing touchdown with 2:43 left in the game, as that iced the game.       The Hawks  would advance to the Area Playoff game in which they were counted the home-team vs. Crowely at Dragon Stadium in South Lake.

The early – goings in this game was a slug-fest, than the Hawks would take it from their.     Romping their opponents, as their offense powered them to victory  was Birdville.     45-21 the final, Hawks.

Birdville (13-0), led by star junior running-back Xavier Turner,  ran for four rushing touchdowns on the way to sending  Lubbock Monterey’s (9-4) varsity football team to off-season  in Saturday’s 4A Division I state quarterfinal Texas high school football game.     The Hawks, while allowing over 400 yards of offense from the Plainsmen,  made the most of a couple  Monterey hiccups and exploded on offense themselves, and the turnovers from Lubbock Monterey also helped set up some scoring drives for the undefeated Birdville Hawks.    Birdville, thanks to an explosive offense, and an oppritunted afternoon, advances on to face Denton Guyer on Saturday, December 8th at  2 P.M,  at South Lake Carroll’s Dragon Stadium.

Preview on Birdville vs. Denton Guyer:     — This will no doubt, be  Birdville’s toughest challenge that they have faced all season long.    Denton Guyer has eliminated: Aledo (defending state champions), and Amarillo, but if there’s anyone left that has a shot at it,  Birdville may just have the best chance at it.   — The Hawks showed that they can respond to their opponent when it counts in the Bye-Round of the playoffs against Azle.        This one though, is going to be different.    It will be a challenge.

But  maybe that test the Azle Hornets gave the Birdville Hawks a few weeks ago will help benefit the Hawks in this one.   Maybe it will help them push themselves past their limits, against a very talented Denton Guyer Wildcats football team, who has won 11 games in a row.      The Hawks will also need some stops, and take advantage of the mistakes (if any) that Guyer makes.     — Hold on folks, because this one should be a top heavy-weight match-up.

HALTOM CITY:      Birdville showed they can respond in delicate game situations on Thursday night, defeating the Panthers.

Birdville  committed 20 turnovers in Thursday night’s  North East Lions Club Tournament game (Round one) vs. Paschall High.     — Despite an at times, sloppy offense, the Hawks got some big scores when it counted the most, and their defense, according to Coach (Jeff) Fitch is what helped them win this game, more than anything.  “Our defense helped make our offense”  Fitch said.

— There was a point in the game where  neither team could get a score, and that point came in the fourth-quarter.     — All the sudden, almost out of  no where, the Hawks started hitting some shots.   It started with Crane, and then Kendall Johnson.      That’s what put the game away for Birdville (2-3), who beat the Paschall Panthers (1-3) 45-41 on Thursday night.       And it’s situations like this, that will help guide this team through the season.     They  needed  to prove they could respond, and they did.   It’s games like the one vs. Denton Guyer, and Tuesday night’s heart-breaking last-second loss to Fossil Ridge that show they can respond.    — And as long as they can do that, they should be just fine.             Birdville will play Haltom for tomorrow night’s round two tournament game at the Thomas Coliseum.

Hawks lose close game to Fossil Ridge

Birdville vs. Fossil Ridge:

Written by Site Editor Thomas Brunt:

HALTOM CITY:   Coach Jeff Fitch said it wasn’t a must win game.    His team didn’t play like it was one either.  — It was only their fourth game of  the new season.      They we’re coming off a closely contested battle from their last-game in which they only lost by seven to a really good team.  “Every time you play an athletic team, it helps you” said Coach Fitch before the game.          —  It helped them out somewhat, but the Hawks defensive game showed up more than their offense,  and this, and  16 turnovers isn’t going to help you out much.     Though, it should be noted the Hawks only had three-second half turnovers, as oppose to 13 first-half  turnovers.   Sophomore guard Andrew Sorrells  led the team in something he probably didn’t want to, as he  had 4 turnovers.

— However, despite these turnovers, the Hawks were in it the entire game, as the two team’s  struggled to get ahead with a convincing lead at any-point.    But turnovers, like they had earlier in the game, haunted the Hawks, as they turned it over on a crucial possession in the final seconds.      The Panthers, much to the Hawks misfortunes capitalized on the turnover, going the other way and scoring the game-winner with nine seconds left in the game.      — Birdville got the ball down the court and was able to get one last-shot at it, and it was a nice look, to, however it didn’t go in, as the buzzer sounded, the Panthers squeezed on past the Hawks in this one, 32-30.   “When you hold someone to 32 points, you’re supposed to win” Coach Fitch said.   “We missed a lot of makeable shots”  he added.      — While this one wasn’t a must win, it can be looked up as a game they could have won, but they can only move on and continue to improve and play basketball, as there is 28 games remaining, and the Hawks have shown some moments of  greatness so far this season, even at 1-3.

Birdville hosts a tournament at the  Willy G. Thomas Coliseum on Thursday (11/29-Saturday (12-1).

Birdville at Azle Game Story (11/13/12).

AZLE:  The Hornets aren’t one afraid to shoot the three-ball.
Birdville Men’s Varsity Basketball team lost to Azle 75-41 in Thursday night’s season opener,  as Azle was led by their three best players, who took off in the second-half, they had three players with double-digit figure points.
               — The Hawks were led by junior guard, Jeremy Crane.   He scored 15 of Birdville’s  45 team points, Crane connected on six of fourteen shot attempts.     Crane, was a little rocky, shooting from three-point range, though, going 1-6, he still played hard. “I need to attack the rim more” said Crane.    The Hornets led the Hawks for the most part of the game.   The second-half, though  was a different story than the first half.        Azle only held what was a 3 point lead (25-22) at halftime, thanks to some three pointers, that is.    “If they’d missed a couple of the three’s, we’d have the lead”.  said Birdville head coach Jeff Fitch.   The Hawks, fueled by turnovers, and sloppy shooting, is what gave themselves a headache to finish the game out.
The fact that the  three’s for the Hornets kept falling in the second half, didn’t help Birdville’s chances of winning much either.    The Hornets outscored Birdville 46-23 in the second-half, and went on to win the game 71-45.   Despite the loss, there are some positives that come out of this game for Birdville, they proved that with the inexperienced players they have, they can keep up with an older more mature team, at least for a half, anyway.  “It’s always a learning experience, everyday is one”  Fitch said.
*Other Notes*:
Kendall Johnson was second in scoring for the Hawks, as he finished with nine points.     Senior Ben Barnett had three points.   Junior guard Austin Mitchell also had three points.

NORTH RICHLAND HILLS:    The Birdville Hawks will play the Azle Hornets in the by-round of the playoffs, which will be on Thursday, kickoff at 7:00, the game will be held at Chisholm Trail High School.     Previously, however there was talk that Birdville would face Byron Nelson in the first-round,  due to an Azle loss on Friday night, Nelson will miss the playoffs, despite winning their game with no problem.   — It was under these circumstances, however that  Trophy-Club was unable to make it.

Birdville Hawks one game away.. from 10-0

The Birdville Hawks can do something they haven’t done before in school-history in going undefeated for the season, at 10-0.   If  the Hawks defeat Fort-Worth Polytechnic on Friday, they will accomplish just that.  Birdville has demolished  every district opponent, but not just everyone in district.  Birdville whooped both Arlington heights and Richland.  Their closest margin of victory was a 37-16  victory at Saginaw Boswell.   Despite all of these achievements though, the Hawks haven’t received any respect from the state polls, but they  couldn’t care less, they’ve just gone out and played their game.

Birdville Football Playoffs Predictions

The Birdville Hawks are now on the cusp of becoming the district champions of district 6-4A.   Birdville has obliterated everything in their path, and Polytechnic is up next on the list.   The Hawks are tired of finishing second in district play.   — Birdville’s closest game was a 37-16 victory at Saginaw Boswell, who plays Saginaw at home on Friday night (11/2/12).   The Hawks successes start at both the starting quarterback in Justin Martin who has been superb with 25 touchdown passes,  with only just 3 picks, and the senior has completed 69% of his passes.   Birdville running-back Xavier Turner, who has been as dominant at his own position, as he’s scored 15 rushing touchdowns, and 3  receiving touchdowns to make a total of 18 on the season.  — By defeating a previously undefeated Saginaw Rough-Riders team, the Hawks will play former district rival Byron Nelson in the first round of the playoffs.

Prediction:

Birdville defeats Byron Nelson, losing to Denton Guyer in the second round

By “Hawk Newspaper” Sports-Editor, Thomas Brunt:

FORT-WORTH: Birdville torched an absolutely defenseless Saginaw Chisholm Trail team by scoring 56 points first half on the way to a total of 69 total for the game  in a district 6-4A game on Friday night at Chisholm Trail Stadium, Birdville managed to score on seven of their eight offensive possessions in the first half, also scoring on the first play of an offensive drive twice, was Birdville.

Hawks quarterback Justin Martin, as he has been all season long shredded yet another defense, passing for 237 yards alone in the first half, overall though in though in the first half, the Birdville offense managed to get 402 yards, while Chisholm Trail only picked up 14 yards, and one first down.

The Hawks (9-0, 7-0 in 6-4A) struck first in the game, thanks to a four play drive to open the game out, before anyone in the stands knew it, Birdville running-back Xavier Turner was in the endzone with a five yard rushing touchdown for the first-score of the game, that just being the first of  many times for it occur.

Turner would finish with 15 carries, 116 yards, three rushing touchdowns in the first half, and a receiving touchdown, he would also score the Hawks first three scores of the game.

The second time he scored, it was a 2 yard-run, making the score 14-0, with 4:48 left in the opening quarter, and then on a 58 yard screen-pass from Martin, the damage from Turner stopped there, but not overall from the team, as Steven Neleson returned an interception 16 yards for a touchdown three plays after the 58 yard screen-pass touchdown to Turner, the Nelson pick made the score 28-0, this started a scoring-fest for Birdville, who wouldn’t stop really until the fourth-quarter.   Birdville slowed down, as they had more than a commanding lead in the last-quarter of play, as they only scored a field-goal, the Hawks, with much of the scoring coming in the first half, and with the defense stopping Chisholm Trail’s empty tank of offense, the Hawks, like they had two times before this game, shut-out the Rangers, winning this one 69-0.

Birdville at Chisholm Trail pre-game blog: It’s not going to be pretty..

Fort-Worth:  The 8-0 undefeated Birdville Hawks take on the 1-6 Chisholm Trail Rangers at Chisholm Trail High School, if Birdville wins this one, they will be the  official district champions of district 6-4A.   — On paper, this game would look to be a complete miss-match, as the majority of Chisholm Trail’s roster is made up of Sophomores, this is Chisholm Trail’s first year in existence as a school, it would be a major upset for the Rangers, not only that but HIGHLY unlikely, like I said, expect a blowout, so don’t be surprised to see most of Birdville’s JV to play the second half.

My Players To Watch:

Hawks starting quarterback: Justin Martin, and JV quarterback: Ty Enghledart

Hawks running-back: Xavier Turner, and JV running-back: Conner Gray

Hawks wide-receivers, pretty much all of them..

My Final Score Prediction:

Birdville: 64, Chisholm Trail:  0
