Living in the world, and witnessing

Jesus didn’t want for us to live away from the world, but to live in it.  This makes me wonder though… Why do we have people like Monks who go out and live in the desert or in caves and live apart from the world? You can’t possibly tell me that we can make a difference for the glory of Christ and the Great Commission (Matthew 28:20) if we are living away from where we are needed. I refuse to believe it, because that’s can’t be the Gospel. As Jesus’s disciples, we are called to reach out and go and do things.  Otherwise, we aren’t witnessing to the world (Acts 1:7).  The Christian life, as ultimately displayed, perhaps greatest at the cross is not one of comfort, but of trial, persecution, and than after many tribulations, we will enter the Kingdom of Heaven.  Following Jesus is meant to be uncomfortable.
