Self-Denial.. and being a CHRISTian

What does it mean to be a Christian?   What does it mean to truly biblicaly follow Jesus?   I’ll tell you what it means.  More than anything, it means to deny ourselves.   When Jesus tells us that we most pick up a cross to follow him, what he’s saying is that we must deny ourselves.    And this isn’t optional.   When we decide to follow him, we don’t have any say in how we do it.  Jesus gets to define the relationship, not us.  When we follow him, it’s anywhere, anytime, anyhow, anyway.    When I read Acts, I’m reminded that one of the greatest Churches in the history of  Christianity,  was led by normal people.  What made them so successful in spreading the Gospel?   They denied themselves.    It wasn’t just fasting through a meal, but often times,  shipwrecked, and imprisoned for his efforts of spreading the Gospel.    Notice these men didn’t stop and give up after a little persecution, they continued.   All of them, eventually to the point of death.   That’s the cost of discipleship.
