God will bless us, but he’s not our butler.

I believe God will bless us, and will give us all that we need, but I also believe that he wants us to know that we each have our own callings to serve him, and if we are to act accordingly to his callings to us, then a lot of what we do should be to serve him, to give up all the worldly possessions, attachments, everything so our eyes are completely fixed on the cross, and nothing else.  In chapter 6 of Matthew’s gospel, Jesus tells us “Nobody can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other.”   Remember when the rich-man asked Jesus how he could inherit the kingdom of God?  “One thing you lack,” he said. “Go, sell everything you have and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.”  (Mark 10:21).   What Jesus said in the gospels, he’s not just saying to whoever he was teaching at the time, he’s talking to us, too.   So go, and follow Jesus at any, and all costs.
