SURPRISE, Ariz. — Gavin Floyd, one of the Chicago White Sox starters, pitched in the B game here at Surprise rather than in the Cactcus League affair this afternoon.
That’s probably because the White Sox wanted Floyd to stretch out to three innings and wanted to do it more in a controlled environment, though you have to wonder if the fact that Chicago faces the Rangers in Texas to begin the 2012 season doesn’t factor into it, either. Floyd is likely the No. 3 starter and would pitch in the Sunday night game on ESPN in Arlington on April 8.
Tommy Mendonca hit a long double off Floyd to right-center field and Brandon Snyder had an RBI single off him in Floyd’s second inning of work. Floyd ended up allowing two runs in three innings with a walk and two strikeouts.
* It was mainly current minor league players in the game for Texas, though utility infield candidates Greg Miclat, Luis Hernandez and Yangervis Solarte were also in the game.
* Leonys Martin hit a triple, belting a ball to the gap in right-center in the seventh inning and racing to third.
* Mitch Stetter pitched a 1-2-3 inning and got the only left-handed hitter he faced, getting him to pop up to second.
