SURPRISE, Ariz. – The Rangers have no plans to curtail Derek Holland’s “antics.”
Manager Ron Washington said Sunday he spoke with the lefty about all of his appearances over the offseason and his penchant for growing strange hair. Washington said he doesn’t expect Holland to change his approach.”If it doesn’t impact what he does between the white lines, that’s fine,” Washington said. “I don’t see any change in him. He’s still goofy. He’s a typical left-hander. Something is wrong with one side of his brain. But if he does something out of kilter, we’ll put him back in line.It won’t be just me. The players will get all over him. But we want our players to be who they are.”
Among other “goofy” moments, Holland has grown a very bad mustache, turned his wild hair into a mullet and appeared blending into the weather map on a WFAA-TV broadcast.
Holland said when he arrived at camp that he intended to be all business when preparing for starts and between starts. He makes his first spring appearance on Monday against Kansas City.
